Roland Jay Hamlin, age 91, of Hurdland, MO, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017, in the Knox County Nursing Home, Edina, MO.
He was born in Knox County, MO, on June 5, 1925, the son of Bruce Francis and Velma Gladys Kenoyer Hamlin.
He was united in marriage to Verna Marie Kilbride of January 22, 1949, at Memphis, MO.
Surviving are his wife Verna Marie Hamlin of Hurdland, MO, two sons, Jim (Kathy) Hamlin of Hurdland, MO and David (Audrey) Hamlin of Edina, MO, five grandchildren Darrell Hamlin, J.B. (Valerie) Hamlin, Tara Hamlin, Brett (Bryana) Hamlin, Adrienne Hamlin and her fiancé Danton Harvey, six great grandchildren, Erica Hamlin, Andy (Jaime) Hamlin, Ava, Lauren, Mallory and Holly Hamlin, and six great-great grandchildren, four brothers Frank Hamlin, Harley (Judy) Hamlin and Charley (Nancy) Hamlin all of Edina, MO, Tom Hamlin and his friend Maureen of Novelty, MO, three sisters Julia Anne Peters of Camp Point, IL, Betty Jo Shahan of Kirksville, MO, and Mary Lou Bishop of Edina, MO, three sisters-in-law Mildred Hamlin of Edina, MO, Garles Hamlin of Brashear, MO, and Joan Hamlin of Edina, MO, and several nieces and nephews.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Ray, Ralph and Donnie Hamlin, one son Stephen Jay Hamlin, a grand daughter-in-law Pam Hamlin, two brothers-in-law Ray Peters and Jack Bishop and Sisters-in-Law Ernestine Hamlin and Mary Jane Hamlin.
Roland lived his entire life in Knox County where he received his education. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II from 1945 to 1946. During his military service Roland served as a cook on the USS Buckeye (a minesweeper) in Japan and the Philippines.
Roland was a self-employed carpenter for Hamlin Construction for many years and drove a School Bus for seventeen years for Hurdland and Knox County Schools. Roland also dug graves and set monuments from 1952 to 1987. Roland was a member of the Hurdland Nazarene Church. Roland never meet a stranger, he enjoyed visiting with family and friends at the Hurdland 4 th of July Celebration and the State Fair, riding his side by side around, and riding on his Pontoon at Baring Lake.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017, in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO. Pastor Rick Barnes and Pastor Nancy Douglas will officiate the services. Burial will be in Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville, MO.
Music will be (Where the Roses Never Fade) provided by Audrey Hamlin, Debbie Peters and Adrienne Hamlin vocalist.
Casket bearers will be Larry Sykes, C. Von Snow, Glen Moots, Leon Moots, Harold Vansickle and Mike Peters. Honorary bearers will be Travis Lee, Larry Stone, Gary Stone, Gene Crandall, Bill Baker, Howard Florea and Butch Newman.
Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. of Friday, January 20, 2017, with family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO.
Memorials may be made to the Knox County Nutrition Site of Donor's Choice. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1, Edina, MO 63537.
