Obituary

Madelyn Ruth O'Brien , age 100, of Edina, MO, passed away Friday, February 14, 2025, in the Knox County Nursing Home. She was born February 14, 1925, in Quincy, IL, the daughter of George and Florence Hoffman Schuering.

She was united in marriage to Dr. Thomas Daniel O'Brien, Jr. on December 28, 1946, in Quincy, IL. He preceded her in death on June 13, 2009.  Madelyn was also preceded in death by her parents, one son Timothy Paul O'Brien, one sister Maxine Swain, and two brothers Edward and Donald Schuering.

Surviving are five children: Colleen Ann (Steve) Coram of Buckeye, AZ; Patricia Ann (Russell) Sainz of Wildwood, MO; Kathleen Ann Hill of Ballwin, MO; Terrence Joseph (Anne) O'Brien of Lenexa, KS; and Daniel George (Nancy) O'Brien of Normal, IL. Madelyn is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, 21 great- grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Madelyn was raised in Quincy, IL where she graduated from Notre Dame High School. Her first job was as an elevator operator at a Carson-Pirie Scott & Co department store. She married Thomas O'Brien in 1946. During his years as a student of veterinary medicine, they lived in Columbia, MO and Pocahontas, AR. Madelyn was a skilled bookkeeper and helped support Tom's education until they moved to Edina, MO in 1951.

During Madelyn and Tom's many years as residents of Edina, they raised six children and were involved with St. Joseph Elementary School and St. Joseph Catholic Church. Madelyn was a member of the St. Ann's Sodality Group and was actively involved with her children's education and with the Catholic Church.

Madelyn enjoyed many years working at Kelly's Furniture Store, the Knox County Nursing Home, and Main Street Fashions. She supported her husband throughout his 58-year career and worked at various jobs for him at the Edina Feed and Livestock Supply Co.

A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 22, 2025, in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edina, MO.  Father Boniface K. Nzabonimpa will officiate the services.  Music will be provided by the Clark Family and Ryan Park.

Casket bearers will be Sam Harris, Ben Harris, Joe Harris, David Addison, Nick Hill, Peter Hill, Jackson Vestal, Jared O'Brien, Alex O'Brien, Adam Toth, Alex Toth, Justin O'Brien, Nate O'Brien, Michael O'Brien, Paul O'Brien and Mark O'Brien.

A prayer service will be held Friday, February 21, 2025, at 6 p.m. with visitation following until 8 p.m. in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO.
