Obituary

Lyle Leon Van Houten age 88 of Clarence, MO passed away Thursday, May 22, 2025 in Clarence, MO.  Lyle was born September 10, 1936 in Clarence, MO to Charlie and Erma Gunn Van Houten.  He met his wife Anna Louise Turner before he was 16 years old.  He drove to Cherry Box in a friend's car before he had his driver's license.  They were married June 5, 1956 and made their home in Clarence, MO.  Anna Louise passed away December 22, 2023.

Lyle is survived by his three children, Stephen and Terresa Van Houten, Cheresa and Randy Stelle and Lordeen Van Houten.  Three granddaughters Valerie and Brad Fallert, Channing Black and Hillary Black.  Three great grandsons Cade and Cort Fallert and Draden Black.    Two sisters-in law Kathryn Van Houten and Margaret Turner.  A niece Kim Offen, nephews Kevin Harris, Kyle Harris and John Jr. Van Houten.  Step grandchildren Carrie and Dwayne Thrasher and Chris and Veronica Brengle.  Step great grandchildren Cami and Chavese Viers and Gabe Thrasher, step great-great grandchild Kynsleigh Viers.

Lyle joined the Hagers Grove Christian Church at an early age and later moved his membership to the Clarence Christian Church.  Lyle joined his wife in teaching the little kids Sunday school class and youth group.  Lyle served on the Clarence City Board, Clarence Fire Department, Maplewood Cemetery Board and the Clarence Jaycees.

At an early age Lyle would sit up bowling pins for Glen Dorrel at the bowling alley.  He also cleaned the steps up to Dr. Harlan's office every Saturday for 10 cents.  When in high school, he worked for Frank Taylor and Marvin Thomas at the Standard Station.

Lyle bought the service station located at the Junction of 151 and 36 in 1957.  Later in 1998 he built the mini storage units.  Lyle and Anna Louise were in business for 68 years and served their community well.

Lyle is preceded in death by his loving wife, his parents, two brothers Johnny Van Houten and Buddy Van Houten, and one sister Marie Harris and one brother-in-law L.C. Turner.

Lyle donated his body to the A.T. Still University.

A Memorial service will be held at the Clarence Christian Church, Thursday May 29, 2025.  Visitation will begin at 4:30 p.m. and a service will follow at 6 p.m.   Following the services a meal will be served and all are invited.

Memorials are suggested to the Shiloh Christian Church Ranch or the donor's choice.  Memorials may be left at the church or mailed to Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1, Edina, MO 63537.
