Obituary

Larry Dean Hayes, age 78, of Edina, MO passed away Thursday, December 29, 2022, at his home in Edina.  He was born July 11, 1944, in Knox County, MO, the son of Robert Monroe and Frances Georgena Hart Hayes.  He was united in marriage to Margaret Cheryl Slocum on May 4, 1968 in Hannibal, MO.

Surviving are his wife Cheryl Hayes of Edina, MO, three children, Beverly A. Hayes of Edina, MO, Annette Mitchell of Macon, MO, and Kelly (Lacy) Hayes of Edina, MO, one brother John William (Sherrie) Hayes of Edina, MO, one sister Martha Ann (Martie) Scott of Palmyra, MO, grandchildren, Amber (Chaz) Boatman, Isaiah Prebe and fiancé Emily, Conner Hayes and fiancé Savannah, Collin Hayes, Carrsen Hayes, Kinley Hayes, Wyatt Mitchell, Garrett Mitchell and Hayvin Mitchell, two great grandchildren Alivia and Alijah Boatman, two sisters-in-law Joetta (Mark) Krueger of Lee's Summit, MO and Faye Hayes of Columbia, MO, and several nieces and nephews.   Larry was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Jerry Lee Hayes.

Larry graduated from Edina High School and Gem City Business College in Quincy, IL.  He served in the United States Army Reserves.   In his earlier years Larry drove the tank wagon for Coop, was employed in sales and parts for Cahalan Motors, operated his own trucking business, sold and setup computers to area schools, was employed for J. Burdman Auto Parts in Edina and for the last twenty plus years owned and operated Hayes Auto Supply in Edina until his retirement in October of 2021.  Larry enjoyed spending time as boat captain with his family at the Baring Lake and attending his grandchildren's sporting events.  Larry was a member of the Baring Country Club and was also a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church where he served as Bell ringer and Sacristan since 2006.  Larry was a 4 th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus and had served as Grand Knight and district deputy.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday, January 2, 2023, in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edina, MO.  Officiating the services will be Father Simeon Etonu and Deacon Ken Berry.  Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, Sunday, January 1, 2023, 5 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Music will be provided by Jim & Kyle Clark.

Casket bearers will be his grandsons, Chaz Boatman, Isaiah Prebe, Conner Hayes, Collin Hayes, Carrsen Hayes, Wyatt Mitchell, Garrett Mitchell and Alijah Boatman.

Honorary bearers will be Mark Krueger, Mike Fox, Bill Hayes, Ronnie Peterson, Dean Morgret, Larry Clark and Charlie Houghton.

Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knox County Cancer Fund or American Red Cross.  Memorials may be left at or mailed to Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1, Edina, MO 63537.
