Helen Lorene Pulse, age 91, former resident of the Plevna, Missouri area passed away Thursday, April 11, 2024, surrounded by family, at the Knox County Nursing Home, Edina, Missouri.
She was born at Newark, Missouri on September 6, 1932, daughter of Hurley Vernon and Mabel Irene (Hofen) Lindsey. On June 3, 1951, Helen united in marriage, in a double ring ceremony, to James "Jim" Pulse in Shelbina, Missouri by Rev. J. L. Shoemaker. To this union three children were born, Pamela Sue, Diane and James Michael. Jim preceded her in death on October 28, 2000.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; her step-father, Allen Vanskike; a daughter, Diane Bradley; a son-in-law, Richard Witherow; a sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and James Montague; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Clara Pulse; her parents-in-law, Homer and Martha (Ralls) Pulse; a step-sister, Lavern (Don) Sellens and a step-brother, Orville Vanskike.
Surviving are a daughter, Pamela Sue "Pam" Witherow, Baring, Missouri; a son, James Michael "Mike" (Mary) Pulse of Plevna, Missouri; a brother, James (Alberta) Lindsey, Johnsburg, Illinois; a son-in-law, Dennis Bradley, Novelty, Missouri; six grandchildren, Shawn (Mindy) Witherow, Baring, Missouri, Bobbi (Matt) Clark, Edina, Missouri, Chris (Teal) Pulse, Whitefield, New Hampshire, Ben (Jenny) Bradley, Novelty, Missouri, Angela (Joe) Williams, Kansas City, Missouri and Shane (Rachael) Witherow, Baring, Missouri; eleven great-grandchildren, John Clark, Patrick Clark, Cutter Witherow, Landon Witherow, Teddy Clark, Pete Bradley, Isaac Williams, Alex Pulse, Lindley Witherow, Reata Witherow and Micah Williams; three step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Helen grew to young womanhood in the Newark vicinity, attending Newark Elementary School and Edina High School, graduating with the Class of 1951. After their marriage, Helen and Jim lived on a farm near Plevna, engaged in farming there until his death. She then moved to Plevna to make her home and to Edina about five years ago. She was a member of the Plevna Christian Church and served as Sunday School treasurer after Connie Ahern and as Church treasurer after John Ahern, a sum of about 45 years before moving to Edina. She was also a member of the Plevna Christian Church Women's Council. Her other memberships include, the Darrell L. Knauer American Legion Post #574 Ladies Auxiliary, Plevna Homemakers Extension Club, O. A. T. S. where she served as secretary for many years and the Knox County Extension Council. She drove her car as a school bus for the Plevna Elementary School students living in the country for five years, making two trips each morning and afternoon, gathering and delivering the children safely to school and back home. She ran an Avon route for several years, owned and operated the little grocery store in Plevna for several years, was a substitute cook at Novelty Elementary School, was a volunteer reading books to little ones at the Knox County R-1 Elementary School, served as 4-H Project and Club Leaders when her children were in 4-H. She worked for Heartland Resources for several years and would drive friends in the community that did not or could not drive to doctor's appointments or wherever they needed to go.
Helen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. The word "step" was not in her vocabulary when talking about her extended families. Her love was ever abounding, it has no end.
She enjoyed sewing, ceramics, jigsaw puzzles and most recent years Word Search Puzzle Books. Her biggest joy, however, was visiting with her family and friends, especially her great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, Edina, Missouri, with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at 10 o'clock at the Plevna Christian Church, Plevna, Missouri, with her grandson, Ben Bradley officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Prairie Cemetery, northwest of Bethel, Missouri.
Pallbearers will be Shawn Witherow, Ben Bradley, Shane Witherow, Matt Clark, Joe Williams and Carl Franke.
Honorary Pallbearer will be Chris Pulse.
Memorials may be made to the Pleasant Prairie Cemetery and/or the Plevna Christian Church. Memorials may be left at the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1, Edina, Missouri.
