IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Geraldine Mae
(Gerry) Young
August 23, 1929 – February 7, 2019
Geraldine Mae (Gerry) Young, age 89, of Madisonville, KY formerly of Edina, MO, passed away Thursday, February 7, 2019, in Bowling Green, KY.
She was born August 23, 1929, the daughter of Edward and Rosemarie Albright Marx. She was united in marriage to Joseph Earl Young on July 24, 1948 and he preceded her in death on September 8, 2016.
Gerry was also preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters Helen Marx, Jacqueline McCord and Connie Bentley.
Geraldine "Gerry" was born in Springfield, Ill. At age four her father was killed in an auto accident leaving her mother Marie with three young daughters. Her Mother worked long hours in the local dairy and the girls were expected to keep up the house (under beds were checked for dust and everything in its place or privileges were taken away) hence her housekeeping ethics.
At age 10, her older sister, Helen, drowned, which explains her fear of water, and her determination to have her children learn to swim at an early age. She and her sister, Jackie, loved music. On one of their visits to the Moonglow, where young people went to listen to the latest tunes and dance, she met a handsome sailor, Joe Young. As he told one of his buddies "I think she is "the one!" and she was... their marriage lasted from 1948 until he went to Heaven in 2016.
She loved playing bridge, sewing, and spending long days at Baring Lake with her four children and later her grandchildren. She loved watching them swim, laugh and scream with delight on "the wheel" and big slide. She loved their cabin and having beautiful flowers. She loved red Geraniums and bright Lantan as she called it. You could see her out early in the morning watering the flowers on the dock and being careful not to fall in! She loved the sun and lake but never learned to swim, try as she might, she would sink. She loved taking the kids on rides on old country roads... looking for walnut trees and hilly roads so she could speed up at the crest of the hill and give all of the riders a roller coaster sensation... making all on board laugh and scream with joy!...
She was a great cook (her cheeseburgers and tenderloin sandwiches with fresh fries were crowd favorites, then there was roast, carrots and potatoes or fried chicken) and always had dessert after dinner. As her honorary son Joe said "she was always up for whatever her boys wanted to do! So Halloween decorations were over the top, leaving Trick or Treaters with candy and scary excitement. Football in the front yard was a must. Riding motorcycles down to the creek.okay. From going to Killdays hay barn, running and playing in the house, posters on their bedroom walls and maybe a few beads, to a few white mice running around from a school project or gigging for frogs late at night, she was on board. All of the memories that she allowed to be made will never be forgotten.
She loved to shop. Bargains and second hand stores were some of her favorite pass times. She loved listening to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Tom Jones, Glen Campbell and music of the times.
In her later years she kept up with her bridge and added B-I-N-G-O to her list fun activities. She liked to walk at least two miles a day with Joe until he was unable and then she would walk alone or with a friend. She loved her family, grand kids, great grand kids and was excited to start having great-great grand kids. She was Joe's caregiver when he was unable to get around and lovingly called him her "pain in the butt" . She missed him every day when he was gone...and worried he was looking for her...she did not want to be late in case he needed her.
She was loved more than she ever realized and will be greatly missed!
Surviving are her daughter Karen Coughlin and husband Sid of Madisonville, KY., her son Terry and wife Susan of Sun Lakes, AZ., son Larry and wife Jacquine of Mesa, AZ., and son Denny and wife Kathy of Gallatin, TN, and honorary son Joe Pflum of Kahoka, MO.
