Gary D. Bowman, 84, of Joplin, Missouri formerly of Novelty, Missouri, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on May 29, 2025. He was born in Ridgeway, Missouri to Kenneth and Mary Bowman on August 10, 1940.
In 2022, Gary and his wife Sandy relocated to Joplin to be closer to his daughters and grandchildren – a move that brought him great comfort in his last years. However, he never missed an opportunity to remind them just how many tools had been left behind in his garage back in Novelty.
For 36 years, Gary worked for the Missouri Department of Transportation, where he was known for his dedication and reliability. He retired in April of 2004, leaving behind a career marked not just by hard work but by the respect and friendship of many.
Gary had a gift for working with his hands and spent countless hours in his garage crafting pieces that displayed both his skill and his heart. He took tremendous pride in maintaining a perfectly kept lawn – every blade of grass a reflection of his care and attention to detail.
Gary was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Nancy Bowman, and his son, Darin Bowman. He is survived by his wife, Sandy Bowman, whom he married on June 2, 2001. He leaves behind two daughters, Kellie Bowman (Cedric) and Laura Epler (Chad) who, along with his son, were the pride and joy of his life. He was a proud grandfather to Matthew Beasley (Destiny) and Maria Beasley (Thomas), and uncle to Kathleen Robinson, Joseph Bowman and Theresa Wilson.
Gary had a special place in his heart for animals and never let a stray go hungry. His last and most beloved dog, Cocoa – affectionately known as Cokie – was his constant companion until he crossed the rainbow bridge last spring. In a fitting tribute, Gary will be laid to rest with Cokie's ashes by his side, just as he was during life.
A service to celebrate Gary's life will be held at Hudson Rimer Funeral Home on Saturday, June 7th, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation at 10:00 a.m.
Memorials are suggested to The Novelty Cemetery. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Hudson Rimer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1, Edina, MO 63537.
