Amelia Shahan, age 42, of Hurdland, MO, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2022, surrounded by family at the University Hospital in Columbia, MO.
Amelia was born December 20, 1979, to Walter and Mildred (Hassel) Campbell on Saba Island, Dutch Caribbean. She moved to the United States of America in 1998 to attend Truman State University and later completed her bachelor's degree in Childcare Development at Columbia College.
Amelia was the owner at The Learning Tree Daycare Center in Kirksville, MO for eleven years. In 2018, Amelia discovered her passion for photography and started a second business, Lavender Moon Photography. In November of 2021, Amelia decided to close the daycare and then worked as a substitute teacher at Knox County R-1.
In October of 2000, Amelia met and started a life with Denis Shahan. They were officially married on August 12 of 2006. Amelia also became a step mother at this time. She opened her home many times to foster children over the years, and later adopted five children in February of 2017 with her husband.
Amelia was a well-known person in her community. Friends and family say that she was truly one of a kind: generous, friendly, accepting of everyone, and most importantly- a wonderful mother, wife, and friend. She enjoyed photography, visiting the ocean and the great outdoors, musicals, cooking for family during the holidays, and attending sporting events for her children.
Amelia is survived by her husband Denis Shahan; her children, Gabby Shahan, Mercedes Licht, Blake Shahan, Isaac Shahan, Aiden Shahan, Serenity Shahan, and Haylee Shahan; her mother, Mildred Campbell; mother-in-law Beverly Shahan; her father-in-law Richard Shahan; two sisters, Audrey Najar and Harriet Jakowich; sister-in-law April Franke; brothers-in-law Ethan Shahan, Vicente Najar, and Kent Franke; nieces Meranda Smith, Ashley Najar, Anneka Jokowich, Kelina Jakowich, Brookelle Jakowich; nephews Vicente Najar, Jonathan Najar, and Gautier Jakowich; as well as numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.
Amelia was preceded in death by her father, Walter Campbell; paternal grandparents, Phillip and Harriet Campbell; maternal grandparents, Norman and Millicent Hassell; and uncle Guy Hassell.
Friends and family are welcome to attend a visitation on Friday, July 1, 2022, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and a funeral service on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO.
Memorials are suggested to be left to the Amelia Shahan Family for a memorial to be designated later. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1, Edina, MO 63537.
